Guide to servicing and maintaining your car

Sainsburys Bank, Money Matters team have kindly put together this guest blog on our website with some basic tips to servicing and maintaining your car.

You can keep your car healthy and help prevent the risk of a breakdown with some simple maintenance. Knowing the basics of looking after your car can help save money in the long run, as well as making your vehicle safer. Not having a properly maintained vehicle could end up being an expensive or illegal mistake, invalidating your breakdown cover or car insurance.

Preventing breakdown

There are two ways to reduce your chances of breaking down. The first, and most important, is to stick to your manufacturer’s advice on servicing. Your car’s handbook will tell you when and how often a service is required, and exactly what’s needed. Generally it’s needed once a year, but it can depend on the make and model of your car.

The second is to do your own simple car maintenance checks. You can either do these yourself or enlist the help of a professional mechanic. This includes performing internal and exterior checks on things like engine oil and coolant, power steering, tyres and lights.

Keep your car in top condition

To help keep your motor in great shape, we’ve created a handy guide to maintaining your car. In addition to the basics, it covers a variety of useful additional topics, such as in-car essentials, the servicing and maintenance of electric cars, and what to do in case of a breakdown.
