6 Tips for Choosing Your Next Family Car
A family car is different to every other type of car because of its multi-purpose function – taxi, dining area, baby changing, place to doze off and often travelling to work and a mobile office – Sound familiar?
Here are our top tips for you to consider when choosing your next family car.
Is it big enough?
First of all, space, space and more space is essential for any family car! Is 4 or 5 seats enough or do you need to consider more? Especially relevant is boot size, if you can’t get your buggy and the shopping in the boot then you’re going to be a bit stuck. Also think about whether the seats fold down to give you extra space if you need it.
Is it safe enough?
Car safety is top priority these days and testing and safety features means drivers and their passengers are protected better than ever. Smarter technology and materials provide added security. You can check EuroNCAP website for the latest safety ratings because if the worst does happen you’ll want to make sure you’ve got a good level of protection.
Number and type of doors
Whether you go for a 3 or 5 door depends entirely on your family. It can be a real pain trying to fit a car seat in a 3 door, or to place a sleeping child in the back, therefore it is important to consider the doors. It is also essential to make sure the doors open wide enough to allow easy access. Some vehicles come with sliding doors that can offer more convenience and can make accessing your vehicle so much easier in a tight parking spot.
There are a couple of things almost guaranteed with children – mess and noise. So first thing you might want to consider is whether the upholstery is easy to keep clean should there be any accidents or tantrums – dark colours are much better at hiding the inevitable spills and stains you’ll get with young children. Second consideration is entertainment and could make the difference between a pleasant relaxed journey and road trip to hell! Therefore consider a car with built in DVD players and plenty of USB ports for charging up your family technology!
Don’t forget about yourself
While family often takes priority, you’ll want to ensure that you are catered for to so a little style and panache won’t go a miss! Bluetooth phone connectivity, satellite navigation, split climate control are a few things you might feel necessary. We find heated seats and an automatic are very often listed in our customers list of essentials to.
Is it in budget?
At Prospectus we always try to find you the right vehicle at the right price but the cost of leasing the car isn’t the only thing to think about – there is fuel economy, road tax and insurance to be taken into account so you might want to check on the following:-
- MPG – Official combined fuel consumption figures are not entirely accurate for day-to-day driving they provide a valuable benchmark to compare cars against each other.
- Insurance Group- Insurance is a big cost in running a car so checking the insurance group can mean cash savings.
- Warranty – If something goes wrong it’s nice to know that you can get it fixed under warranty with ease. Warranties usually vary from 3 to 7 years.
- CO2 Emissions – How much road tax you pay is directly linked to emissions. So the lower the emissions, the lower your tax bill plus you’re helping the environment at the same time.
